American music snobs love European music. European music snobs like European music. Mika is why. Micca Penniman was born in Beirut, Lebanon to an American father and Lebanese mother. He grew up in Paris and London during the 80s thus being exposed to a wide variety of art and sound that influences the music he makes today. Like they say nothing is new.
His debut album, Life in Cartoon was released on February 5, 2007 and made a big splash in the UK (He is #1 on the UK charts and #3 in Ireland). The album is pop in the sense that it is light hearted rock based on catchy riffs and melodys. There is no digesting needed to enjoy his music. You can hear Freddie Mercury vocal influences on songs like Love Today. 80s synth rock laces the entire album but is more present on Relax, Take it Easy (Also see Died in Your Arms by Cutting Crew), the first single off the album.
Most songs are light hearted and humours like Big Girl (You are beautiful) but there is a reoccuring theme of homosexuality which lead some to believe that Micca is gay. He refuses to talk about his sexuality with the press so we may never know.
But Micca, I don't care if you are gay or not... Just keep that music coming.
Interesting Fact- Before he started Mika, Micca wrote in-flight music for British Airways and created an Orbit Chewing Gum commercial.
