What the Acadamy is not...

The Academy is... not emo.
not punk.
not Fueled By Ramen.
O wait. Yes they are...
The Academy is... is a band that perplexes me. When I first heard them I associated their sound more with indie then emo although their debut album Almost Here did blend well with that genre. Two years, a couple warped tours, a side project (Cobra Starship via Snakes on a Plane) and cameos on several FBR records later their sound is further from their label than it was at the start.

Don't get me wrong. These guys don't belong on Barsuk. I am not saying that at all. And the certainly don't fit in with Pitchfork. I am just saying they don't fit in the Fueled by Ramen. Their new album Santi is far from a single beat four chord copy cat song structure album that is typical of Fueled by Ramen. It has a dance feel to it ( I guess that is the FBR connection) and more after production affects than a typical emo record. Overall I wouldn't say it is great but it isn't bad.

I just want to say they is out of place on their label.
